Talent Development (Employee and Managment Training) is an organized activity aimed at imparting information and/or instructions to improve the recipient’s performance or to help him or her attain a required level of knowledge or skill (businessdictionary.com). We think of employee training in terms of new employee orientation, annual skills training and on-the-job training.
Development is defined as encouraging employees to acquire new or advanced skills, knowledge, and viewpoints, by providing learning and training facilities, and avenues where such new ideas can be applied (businessdictionary.com). Employee development aims to improve the “soft skills” of employees and managers such as time management, customer service and conflict resolution.
Together, this field within the realm of human resources is now called Talent Development. The term talent development means building the knowledge, skills, and abilities of others and helping them develop and achieve their potential so that the organizations they work for can succeed and grow td.org.
The Association for Talent Development (formerly the ASTD) is a professional membership organization supporting those who develop the knowledge and skills of employees in organizations around the world. As a member, their motto “Together we Create a World that Works Better” sums up why training and development are critical functions in the world of work.
